Endometriosis and wanting a child – what many do not know

Dr. med. Annette NickelMarch 20256 min

Endometriosis is one of the most common gynaecological conditions – and at the same time one of the most frequently overlooked. On average it takes 7–10 years for the diagnosis to be made.

What is endometriosis?

Tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus – on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel or in the abdominal cavity. This tissue reacts to hormonal fluctuations just like normal endometrium: it builds up, bleeds and cannot drain away.

Symptoms that should make you take notice

  • Severe menstrual pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Chronic lower abdominal pain
  • Unfulfilled wish to have children
  • Pain when urinating or passing stool

Endometriosis and fertility

About 30–50% of women with endometriosis have difficulty becoming pregnant. The reasons are varied: adhesions, endometriomas (cysts on the ovaries), altered egg quality or implantation disorders.

What can we do?

In our Endometriosis Centre in Berlin-Mitte we offer specialised diagnostics and therapy – surgical, medicinal and reproductive-medical. Many women with endometriosis become successfully pregnant with our support.

Important: do not wait.

The earlier endometriosis is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis for a later pregnancy.
