Frozen transfer – why frozen embryos are just as successful

Many patients ask us: is a frozen transfer as successful as a fresh transfer? The answer is: yes – in many cases even better.

What is a frozen transfer?

In a frozen transfer, previously frozen embryos are thawed and transferred into the uterus. Vitrification – ultra-fast freezing – has significantly improved embryo survival rates. Today, over 95% of embryos survive thawing unharmed.

Why frozen is often better

In a fresh IVF, the embryo is transferred in a hormonally stimulated cycle. The endometrium may be less optimally prepared due to the stimulation. In a frozen transfer, by contrast, the embryo is placed in a natural or gently prepared cycle – the conditions for implantation are often more favourable.

What ESHRE 2026 shows

The latest European data confirms this trend: frozen transfers have overtaken fresh IVF cycles in Europe for the first time – with 401,483 vs. 158,649 cycles.
