What does health insurance cover – and what not?

Praxis für FertilitätFebruary 20255 min

The cost question is one of the first that patients ask us – and rightly so. Fertility treatments can be expensive. Here is a clear overview.

GKV – statutory insurance

The good news: for married couples, the health insurance covers – under certain conditions – 50% of the costs for up to 3 IVF or ICSI attempts.

Requirements

  • Married couple
  • Woman between 25 and 40 years old
  • Man between 25 and 50 years old
  • Medical indication
  • Cost approval before the start of treatment

Not covered

  • Social freezing
  • Treatment for solo mothers and female couples (unfortunately)
  • Donor sperm treatment

PKV – private insurance

Privately insured patients often have better chances of cost coverage – but: a medical necessity must exist and the affected partner must be privately insured (causation principle). Recommendation: always obtain cost approval first!

Berlin state funding

Since 2021, Berlin has offered additional funding – also for unmarried and same-sex couples. Ask us about it in the first consultation.

Our promise

We discuss all costs openly and transparently BEFORE the start of treatment. No hidden costs, no unpleasant surprises.
